I got a new bike today. If you follow me on Mastodon you’ll probably be treated to some pictures from my rides over the next little bit. I've been riding a KHS single speed for the past sixteen years, so I'm very excited to have something with gears that I can actually climb hills with.
We've got some really awesome trails around here. A few weeks ago I borrowed my brother's cyclo-cross bike and followed the Great Trail up past Shawnigan Lake and looped back via the Mill Bay ferry. My knee started giving me trouble and I called in a ride around the 80km mark, but I was with John Hawthorn and Chris Todorov who both made it all the way back, a full 100km.
Biking has to wait a few days, though. I'm running the Royal Victoria Half Marathon this weekend, my first half marathon. I've been training diligently for months, so I'm feeling ready. I'm already looking ahead, thinking about whether I want to aim for the full marathon next year. Marathon training is big time commitment, so we'll see how I feel after the half.
I made a web framework
Well, not really. But kind of. What I did was take the main pieces of from my article Code Reloading for Rack Apps and package it into a gem. It's totally undocumented, but if you read the blog post I'm sure you can figure it out.
This "framework" is actually in use in a small app that's deployed in the wild right now. I haven't had any issues.
My plan is to continue to extract the framework-y bits of that app into burg.rb (pronounced 🍔🐝) as different components stabilize.

The Ruby Central saga continues and I'm tired. Ruby Central accused André Arko of unauthorized access to Rubygems.org's AWS account. André disputed that version of events. Ruby Central then provided what they called a "Source of Truth Update", whatever that means.
I'm going to be real; no one looks amazing here. This is a mess and (from the perspective of a community member) no one involved seems to be moving towards cleaning it up. The Ruby community looks like a bunch of bridges burning. That sucks.
Agriculture dropped their sophomore record last week. Coming in at 44 minutes long, The Spiritual Sound expands beyond the bounds of their debut album's black metal style. They play with elements of shoegaze, math rock, and even sludge, all tied together by Meyer and Chowenhill's excellent guitar work. The path of experimentation suits this band well. (Oh, and there's an appearance from Emma Ruth Rundle too.)
