Advent of Code

If you're reading this on the day it goes out, we're only a couple days from the start of the Advent of Code. I'm going to be solving all the problems on stream again this year! Go subscribe to my Twitch channel if you want to follow along. It's lots of fun.

When I mentioned on Dead Code that I was probably not going to start on the first, I was wrong. In my time zone, the puzzles release at 9pm the night before. I'm also busy that night, but that just means that I'll be streaming on the afternoon of the first.

I'll be solving the puzzles in Ruby, with a focus on solving them in the most fun ways I can think of. Next week's episode of Dead Code features a conversation with Noah Gibbs about why we write code.

I won't spoil the interview, but I joked on Bluesky that I'll be doing Delight-Driven Development. I'll be aiming for designs and approach that spark joy in me. The best design is one that you enjoy creating and working with. There is no other measure.

Follow me on Mastodon, Bluesky or Twitch to catch when I'm going live. We're going to write some fun, weird Ruby.

Speaking of fun, JP Camara published a blog post this week about calculating the largest known prime number in Ruby. When I saw the news that someone had found a new largest prime number, I immediately tried computing it and Ruby without success. Shout out to JP for showing me how to do it!

Since it's Friday (the day new music drops), here's what I'm listening to today: Accelerating the Rot by Defeated Sanity. It's a little chaotic at times, but overall it's a technically impressive brutal death record with some excellent drum work.
